The subject of equipment is a mine field! With all the different disciplines within the sport, as well as AT and recreational boating the days of one kayak for everything are long gone. So what to do? Read on..........

Club Equipment

All RN/RM clubs have a selection of kayaks for use by club members. Normally clubs have enough equipment to get you started in the sport. They have boats and kit for pool sessions and a selection of (often quite dated) kit for use in the big out doors. Ask at your club night to find out what is available.

RNKA Equipment

The RNKA has a stock of kayaks and some equipment for use when competing in recognised events. This equipment is held at various locations around the UK and you should liaise directly with the discipline secretary concerned if you need to borrow something. The RNKA committee has just embarked on a new equipment programme to update our equipment in all disciplines. This will take time so be patient but eventually we hope to be able to compete against the other services on an even footing.

Personal Equipment

If kayaking is the sport for you then eventually you will want to buy your own boat (or boats!) and kit. This can be expensive and there is a huge amount of choice on the market. Take advice from experienced people you trust (by all means contact the RNKA discipline secretaries for specific advice) and make sure you try before you buy. Everyone likes to have brand new kit but the second hand kayak market is a great way of picking up the latest designs at a much reduced price, as long as you don't mind a few scratches on your plastic before you take the boat out.

Finally, as a member of the RN/RM you are fortunate that it is possible to get discounts on virtually all brands of kayaking equipment. To find out more contact the RNKA committee.
